The Selection Process

Both the print version and the on-line version of Super Lawyers is a listing of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have achieved an exemplary level of professional achievement and peer recognition. Published as a part of the nationally distributed Super Lawyer Magazine, the listing is intended to be a resource for legal counsel. Only lawyers who may be hired by the public are eligible for nomination. No one may purchase his or her way onto the listing. The lengthy selection process begins with peer nominations and includes independent third-party research. Each potential candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of achievement, with final selections made on a state level.

Florida Trend Magazine Selects Icard Merrill Attorneys as Florida Legal Elite

Charles J. Bartlett and William W. Merrill III, shareholders in the Sarasota based law firm of Icard, Merrill, Cullis, Timm, Furen & Ginsburg, P.A., are included in the 2012 edition of Florida Trend’s Florida Legal Elite. This annual listing recognizes less than 2% of all Florida attorneys, as chosen by their peers in the profession. Florida Trend has been the respected source of insight for leaders, business executives, top government officials, and civic trend-setters for more than 50 years. Florida Trend reaches over 250,000 readers every month, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Mr. Bartlett is listed in the Commercial Litigation area of practice and Mr. Merrill is included in the Environmental and Land Use Law practice area.

The Florida Legal Elite recognizes lawyers who exemplify a high standard of excellence in their profession. The voting process starts in October, prior to publication of the list the following July. Mr. Bartlett, a senior shareholder at Icard Merrill, joined the firm in 1979 and concentrates his practice in commercial litigation, real estate, and business law, with an emphasis on representing small to medium-sized businesses. Mr. Bartlett served as president of the firm from 1987 to 1998 and has been actively engaged in the Florida Bar and the Sarasota County Bar Association. Attorneys Robert K. Lincoln and Stacy Dillard-Spahn Were Active Participants in Seminar’s Panel Discussion

Robert K. Lincoln and Stacy Dillard-Spahn, attorneys at Icard, Merrill, Cullis, Timm, Furen & Ginsburg, P.A., were presenters at a seminar at the City, County and Local Government Law Section of the Florida Bar in St. Augustine recently. Mr. Lincoln organized and Ms. Dillard-Spahn moderated the panel presentation entitled “Exactions Under Current Law and Home Rule.”

This was a highly interactive discussion that addressed recent statutes and how they affect or limit the home rule powers of local governments to assess new or existing development to pay for infrastructure.

Arthur D. Ginsburg Receives Top Award

14 members of Sarasota-based law firm Icard, Merrill, Cullis, Timm, Furen & Ginsburg, P.A. were honored recently by the 12th Judicial Circuit and Legal Aid of Manasota for pro bono legal assistance provided to indigent individuals and families in Sarasota, Manatee, and Desoto Counties.

Arthur D. Ginsburg, a senior member of the firm, was presented with the highest award — The Judge Robert B. Bennett, Pro Bono Excellence Award — for overall excellence, leadership, and dedication. Mr. Ginsburg donated the highest number of pro bono hours within the local legal community. He has volunteered for Legal Aid since 1991 and has been consistently recognized for his pro bono service. “I feel strongly about being able to meet the needs and provide continuous direction to those in our community that need assistance. Pro bonowork is enormously gratifying and I encourage all local attorneys to partner with Legal Aid of Manasota. The area’s less fortunate need our help”, said Mr. Ginsburg.

Robert G. Lyons, President of Icard Merrill, reiterated the firm’s commitment to pro bono work: “Public service is a long-standing tradition and is deeply rooted in our firm’s culture. Pro bono work is, in part, what makes our lawyers strong leaders in our practice and in our communities.”

All recipients of the 2012 Pro Bono Awards were honored at a ceremony at the Judge Lynn N. Silvertooth Judicial Center. The event was hosted by the Honorable Judge Andrew D. Owens, who, in his closing remarks, challenged members of the legal community to increase their level of participation and to invite others who are not currently participating to get involved.

About Legal Aid of Manasota

Established in 1991, Legal Aid of Manasota is a non-profit agency that provides free legal services to low-income residents in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The goal is to provide equal access to justice for those who cannot afford to pay an attorney by partnering with local lawyers who donate their time and experience. Legal Aid of Manasota provides assistance in a variety of non-criminal fields such as adoption, debt collection, employment discrimination, housing issues, probate, advance directives and consumer finance. They also work with community groups and service agencies to provide current information on legal issues affecting low-income families. They host monthly free community education classes such as the Pro Se Divorce Clinic, where participants are taught how to represent themselves in a divorce action, where individuals can meet with attorneys to discuss foreclosure prevention options.

Thomas F. Icard, Jr. Named Mediation Lawyer of the Year by The Best Lawyers in America?

The Best Lawyers in America®, among the oldest and most respected peer review publications in the legal profession, has named Thomas F. Icard, Jr. of Icard, Merrill, Cullis, Timm, Furen & Ginsburg, P.A. as the 2012 “Best Lawyers Mediation Lawyer of the Year” for the Tampa area. The 2012 list is based on more than 3.9 million confidential evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers across the country. Announcing this designation,Best Lawyers President Steven Naifeh stated that “recognition by one’s peers is the most meaningful form of praise in the legal profession.”

This marks the sixth consecutive year that Mr. Icard has been listed in two practice areas - Mediation and Construction Law. After more than a quarter of a century in publication, Best Lawyers in America is also now designating “Lawyers of the Year.” These individuals have received particularly high ratings from their peers for their abilities, professionalism, and integrity in high-profile legal specialties in large, legal communities. Only one lawyer in each specialty in each community is so honored.

Mr. Icard is a Diplomate of the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators and a by-invitation member of the Florida Circuit-Civil Mediator Society and the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. He began his practice at Carlton Fields in Tampa in 1973 and joined Icard Merrill in 1995. In addition to his work as a mediator and arbitrator, Mr. Icard focuses his nationally recognized practice on construction related matters. This includes preparation and review of contract documents, claims negotiation, and multiparty litigation. He is a former member of the Executive Council of the Trial Lawyer Section of The Florida Bar and a former chairman of the Forum on the Construction Industry of the American Bar Association.
